Wal-Mart earnings: Some analysts say traffic has fallen, others say it has grown
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is expected to report second-quarter earnings on Thursday before the market opens. While Cowen & Company analysts say the retail giant has momentum, its latest Consumer Tracker analysis found a decline in unique visitors, with 79.9% of respondents saying they’d visited a Wal-Mart WMT, +0.26% store or the website during the May through July period.
That’s down from 81.2% last year. Cowen notes that this analysis doesn’t account for frequency of visits. The Consumer Tracker also showed a dip in satisfaction rates, with declines in all categories including customer service, merchandise selection and prices.
Here’s everything you need to know about Wal-Mart’s earnings
Wal-Mart is set to report second-quarter earnings before the bell on Thursday. Here’s what Wall Street is expecting: Earnings per share: $1.07, according to a survey of analysts by Thomson Reuters. — Revenue: $122.84 billion, Thomson Reuters said. — Same-store sales: an increase of 1.7 percent, according to Thomson Reuters. Big-box retailer Wal-Mart has been defending its turf against internet giant Amazon today, as the traditionally brick-and-mortar business is making moves into the digital world.
Wal-Mart is also reportedly growing its online advertising business. Some of Wal-Mart’s latest efforts to get purchases more quickly and efficiently to customers include testing an employee delivery program. The retailer is also piloting a push in its same-day service in certain markets, while retail rival Target just landed a partnership to do the same.
As Walmart Eyes Birchbox, Experts Question The Choice
Birchbox, the monthly service that sends four or five samples of prestige and niche beauty and grooming brands to subscribers for $10 a month, has held talks with several retailers, including Walmart, about a potential sale, reports Recode. The company, which was founded in 2010, has had discussions about a possible sale as it faces a debt payment next year. In 2016, Birchbox laid off workers as it sought to reach profitability after years of focusing on growth.
According to Recode’s reporting, the company has been profitable excluding interest and taxes this year. The report that Birchbox co-founder and CEO Katia Beauchamp has held talks with Marc Lore, Walmart’s e-commerce chief in the U.S., is not surprising. The retailing giant has focused on making acquisitions in areas outside its core customer base since Mr. Lore came on board last August as part of the retailer’s $3.3 billion acquisition of Jet.com.
Trading Lesson | The Right Way to Lose Money
This trading advice can literally…overnight… turn your trading from positive to negative, from frustrated to calm…
During a recent coaching call, I heard the line that changes everything.
“I finally get it.
You have been saying this for months and I finally get it. The more I recognize and stay away from poor trading ideas, the steadier my P&L grows. Doing absolutely nothing else, learning to spot perfect trades, and only trade perfect trades, made me a winner.”
I stopped taking trades because I felt like I needed to trade, or I wanted to trade, or any other reason we all convince ourselves of. My biggest problem now is holding good trades longer. Of course I am ecstatic but I want to drive the point home so you can apply the lesson immediately.
Always strive to lose money on your best ideas. You are definitely going to lose money. We all will. Losing trades are included with “probabilities.” But how you lose is what matters.
