Nike earnings could be squeezed by competition
Nike Inc. is expected to announce third-quarter earnings on Tuesday, after the market closes.
The athletic brand has faced challenges from growing competition, bankruptcies in the sporting-goods space and other factors. However, analysts express confidence in the brand’s strengths in product innovation and marketing, and note new sneakers and clothing like a performance hijab could help the company maintain its lead.
Nike Expected To Log First Earnings Decline In Over 4 Years
Nike (NKE) reports third-quarter results late Tuesday, and the dominant global athletic brand is expected to record its first year-over-year earnings decline since late 2012 as rivalries heat up and retail slows down.
The Street is looking for a 4% year-over-year decline in profit to 53 cents a share and 5% revenue growth to $8.47 billion for the Dow Jones industrial average component.
The bankruptcies of Sports Authority and other sporting goods retailers made their mark on athletic brands last year. The broader brick-and-mortar retail environment continues to adjust to a digital-heavy shopping landscape, though many brands — including Nike — are working on building out stronger direct-to-consumer channels that can circumvent any storefront softness.
What to Watch in Nike Inc.’s Earnings Report
After making Nike (NYSE:NKE) the single worst-performing stock in the Dow last year, investors are warming up to the global sports apparel titan again. Shares have modestly outperformed the market so far in 2017, rising by double digits compared to the Dow’s 6% growth.
Whether those early gains strengthen into a solid rally — or disappear completely — will likely depend on what the company reveals about its business trends in the fiscal third-quarter report due out on Tuesday, March 21 (today).
Today’s Trading Lesson…
Overcoming our Trading Fears
Operating in an unstructured environment. Trading requires you to operate in an environment with few rules and little structure. Most people need order and rules for guidance, it is the way their lives have been structured since childhood.
Confronting your inner self is very difficult. Standing alone is uncomfortable because it makes people do one thing that most feel uneasy about, which is taking responsibility for one’s actions.
Most people like to delegate responsibility, blame others and make excuses when they don’t succeed.
On the Tape Today | 3-21-17
INCY | Incyte showing a clear momentum pause and relative strength. Looking for a $149 buy-stop and a $155 target on a new swing trade. Stop loss planned for a close below $147.50. Order flow is obvious, but momentum sporadic at best. exit into a Saturation Point or get stuck in a trading range for 2 weeks.
PRGO Perrigo Co PLC showing two "well-offered" days of price action, solid bearish order flow and room to go. Creating a game plan for a $68 sell-stop and a target to cover at $60.25.
Tape Reading the SPY ETF
$SPY price action showing little conviction on either side of the tape.
A meager 52 million shares and another melted candlestick, heightens the indecision. The $236 level remains the bullish level to watch. With yesterday’s volume so light, I see no reason to expect the price to break.
The bullish order flow that began after the Presidential election appears to be stalling but that does not mean you should turn bearish. I means be choosier on your bullish trades.
New highs in the first 90 minutes, followed by a slow grind to the lows, begins to wear you out after a while. Consider it a part of the traders life, and be discipline with your money management.
Complaining about the tape makes things worse, because you start to make dumb trades. You force things. Refrain and by the end of the month you come out ahead.
Push trades that aren’t there, I guarantee you won’t get paid.
