Will Bleak Trading Revenue Hurt Goldman’s (GS) Q2 Earnings?
The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (GS) is scheduled to report second-quarter 2017 results on Jul 18. Hurt by higher expenses, Goldman’s first-quarter 2017 results recorded a negative earnings surprise of 4.3%. Further, the bottom line witnessed significant deterioration on a year-over-year basis.
Results were primarily affected by lower equities revenues. However, higher underwriting fees were a tailwind. Notably, the quarter witnessed political uncertainty, reduced levels of volatility and low client activity levels.
Earnings Preview: Financial Giants BAC, GS, And MS Report Q2 Results This Week
Low volatility, low interest rates, and other factors have pressured trading revenues at Goldman Sachs, along with other banks with trading business such as JPMorgan Chase & Co.and Citgroup Inc. Last month, Citigroup CFO John Gerspach said “volatility has been very low this quarter, which has certainly led to somewhat of a softer trading environment, especially in the fixed income and equity markets.”
When Goldman Sachs releases results, it’s expected to report earnings of $3.51 on revenue of $7.57 billion, according to consensus third-party analyst estimates. Those estimates are down from Q2 2016, when the company reported earnings of $3.72 per share on revenue of $7.93 billion, partially due to the weaker trading environment.
On the Tape Today | 7-18-17
COST-Costco trading into a solid pause inside obvious bearish order flow. A clean setup that triggers a new short sale. Game planning a $152 sell-stop. Expecting minor support @ $150 with my ultimate target in the $142 area.
If the general stock market rolls over the next few days an I get a windfall profits and "exhaustion" candlesticks, I will consider booking profits early. Stop loss on a close above $153.50.
SPY ETF hit a saturation point yesterday and performed perfectly…
After a push higher the bullish momentum stalled and profit-taking set in. I know it sounds cliche, but knowing when NOT to buy is just as important as when to buy. These types of correct decisions make the difference between profitability and being a break-even trader.
The minimum decline I am seeing over the next two days is down to the $243 level. If bank earnings miss, expect to see $241. TSLA NFLX and banks are in play today. Take advantage of the volatility.
