Factors to Watch Ahead of Dollar Tree’s (DLTR) Q2 Earnings
Dollar Tree, Inc. DLTR is slated to release second-quarter fiscal 2017 results on Aug 24. The question lingering in investors’ minds is whether this discount store retailer will be able to post a positive earnings surprise in the quarter to be reported.
While Dollar Tree delivered a negative earnings surprise in the last reported quarter, the company has outperformed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by an average of 1.5% in the trailing four quarters. So let’s see how things are shaping up prior to this announcement.
Why some retail earnings could present surprises on Thursday
As a dismal quarter for retail earnings winds down, this week’s batch of quarterly reports may hold some rare positive news for the
beleaguered group of stocks. Among the companies scheduled to report on Thursday before the opening bell are Dollar Tree, Tiffany and Abercrombie & Fitch; GameStop and Ulta Beauty are set to report after the market close. And on Friday, Big Lots is set to announce its earnings before the market opens.
“This has been an unusually disappointing quarter for retailers, with only about half of the companies beating estimates, while over 70 percent in the S&P 500 have beaten those estimates. This is the last week where we could see some positive surprises,” said Erin Gibbs, portfolio manager at S&P Global.

BA-Boeing Co trading very much in line with the general stock market, which is a good thing. Although the long term order flow is clearly bullish, we are switching modes and going into a volatility trade. Game planning an expansion in volatility leading to a few days of momentum.
This means we are NOT looking for a bullish move, but large candlesticks for a few days. Consolidations lead to trend days. This is a short term trade without a bias. We are trading the condition of the price action, not the order flow bias. Looking for a short term momentum move, and then an entry in that direction, for roughly two or three days.
