Amazon earnings: Analysts recognize its dominant position in the U.S., look abroad
Amazon.com Inc. is expected to report second-quarter earnings on Thursday after the closing bell. There’s been a flurry of Amazon AMZN, +1.24% news in recent weeks, from the introduction of its shopping social network Spark, to Amazon Wardrobe, to Prime Day results and the Whole Foods Market Inc. WFM, +0.14% takeover bid.
MKM Partners believes the second quarter will deliver solid results but is turning its attention further down the line. Amazon has been a disruptive force in retail, with MKM referencing U.S. Census Bureau data that put the company’s aggregate share of categories served excluding food at 5% and accelerating.
Here’s What Analysts Are Saying About Amazon Ahead Of Earnings
With Amazon.com (AMZN) set to report second-quarter earnings after the market close on Thursday, analysts who cover the e-commerce giant are giving it positive reviews, including its $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods Market (WFM).
The consensus is that Amazon will report revenue of $37.2 billion, up 22% from the year-ago quarter, as polled by Zacks, with adjusted earnings, of $1.40, up 21%. RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Mahaney reiterated an outperform rating on Amazon and price target of 1,100, in a note to clients Tuesday. “There’s still plenty of growth ahead for Amazon,” Mahaney wrote, particularly in two key markets, retail and cloud computing.
Earnings Preview: What To Expect From Amazon
Amazon ($AMZN) is scheduled to release earnings after Thursday’s close. The e-commerce giant just hit a record high of $1043/share and is currently trading near that level. The stock is prone to big moves after reporting earnings and can easily gap up if they report strong numbers.
Conversely, if they miss, the stock can easily gap down like it did last quarter. To help you prepare, here is what the Street is expecting:
Amazon has a secret health care team called 1492 focused on medical records, virtual doc visits
This is Amazon’s next big target…Amazon has started a secret skunkworks lab dedicated to opportunities in health care, including new areas such as electronic medical records and telemedicine. Amazon has dubbed this stealth team 1492, which appears to be a reference to the year Columbus first landed in the Americas.
The stealth team, which is headquartered in Seattle, is focused on both hardware and software projects, according to two people familiar. Amazon has become increasingly interested in exploring new business in healthcare. For example, Amazon has another unit exploring selling pharmaceuticals, CNBC reported in May.
On the Tape Today | 7-27-17
ADP punched through 2017 resistance on solid earnings related volume. Looking for follow through today using a $106.25 buy stop to trigger a new entry. If not filled will game plan for a 3-5 day pause that holds the $104-105 area, and then swing trade a new bullish leg higher.
The stock market indices not giving much to trade but earnings season appears to be your best friend. This means you may need to get out of your comfort zone and trade some stocks not in your universe.
Many of us trade the same stocks over-and over. We have a universe that waits for signals. If you’re a new trader I would suggest this strategy. The reason is simple, it’s easier to accept risk when you feel like you have control. Sometimes control comes from the quality of the idea, sometimes it comes from “knowing” how you stocks move.
You learn the liquidity, which means you are confident you can exit when you want (or need). You accept the volatility, which means there is enough volatility to earn profits that justify your risk. This delicate balance between risk and profit potential is one all us need to go through, in order to find our own “universe” of stocks.
Trade small, but trade often while you search for your list, and then get aggressive when you are dialed in. How do you know when you’re dialed in? Simple; you begin to lose less, then you have a string of consistency.
Don’t trade bigger until you should.
